Custom Made Engagement Rings
The Phoenix — Why the Best Engagement Rings Begin With a Story
There is a ring on my bench right now that I am very proud of.
It is called the Phoenix. A custom made diamond engagement ring built around a rose — not as ornament, not as a familiar jewellery motif, but because for this particular woman, the rose holds something real. Part of her life at a level that deserved to be worn close to the body every single day.
The shank is open. Left deliberately without the standard closed band. She wanted openness in the ring — space for change, room for growth, a form that reflected her particular way of moving through the world. Every decision in the design came from understanding her rather than from a template.
This is what I have always called emotional sculpture. And it is the only way I know how to make jewellery worth making.

What a custom made engagement ring actually means
Most engagement rings are chosen. You walk into a store, look at what is available, and find the closest thing to what you imagined. Sometimes that works. Often it produces a ring that is beautiful enough but never quite feels entirely yours.
A custom made engagement ring is different at its foundation. It begins not with what is available but with who you are.
I have been making custom pieces for forty years. In that time I have learned that the most extraordinary rings come from the most unexpected starting points. A rose that represents something private and deep. An open shank that speaks of a particular philosophy about life. A stone from a grandmother’s ring given a new form that honours where it came from while becoming something completely new.
The conversation I have before making a custom piece is always the same. I ask about your life — the significant moments, the people who matter, the things you want to carry forward and the things you want to mark. I ask what you want the ring to mean, not just how you want it to look.
From that conversation comes a design. And from that design comes a ring that has never existed before and never will again.
The Phoenix and what it taught me
The woman who commissioned the Phoenix came to me with a feeling rather than a design. She knew the rose needed to be there. She knew she wanted openness. She knew she wanted a diamond at the centre of something that felt alive.
What she could not have known before we talked was exactly how those ideas would translate into a ring. The open shank that curves upward into the rose. The diamond cradled within the petals. The particular proportions that make the piece feel both delicate and strong.
That translation — from feeling to form — is what custom made jewellery is. And it is what I find most meaningful about this work.
A ring like the Phoenix is not a product. It is a collaboration between a maker and the person who will wear the finished piece for the rest of their life. Every element is chosen for a reason. Every curve has a conversation behind it. The diamond at the centre holds the light. The rose holds the meaning.
